FBI foils kidnapping of Governor Michigan

Six Americans are being prosecuted for plotting to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan governor. However, with the help of undercover agents, the FBI was able to foil the plan.

The six conspirators – Adam Fox, Ty Garbin, Caleb Franks, Daniel Harris, Brandon Caserta of Michigan, and Barry Croft of Delaware – wanted to forcibly overthrow the government in a number of states and kidnap Michigan Governor Democrate Gretchen Whitmer. CNN reports this on the basis of the charges against the men.

However, the FBI got wind of the plot when federal agents stumbled upon a group on social media. For example, they were able to send an undercover agent to a meeting between Croft, Fox and some 13 others on June 6. At that meeting, the conspirators decided to contact a militia in the state of Michigan.

Another informant confirmed on June 14 that Fox had met the leader of that militia. He was able to record conversations with Fox that indicated that they wanted to storm the Michigan House of Representatives in the city of Lansing and take people hostage, including the Governor himself.

Governor Whitmer enforced strict corona measures in the state of Michigan, including a lockdown. Not everyone agreed with those measures, as she received several death threats and protests were also made. At one of those protests, in April this year, before the six worked out their plans, armed protesters even entered parliament.

According to some American media, Fox and co. also acted out of dissatisfaction with the lockdown.
