The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cracked a suite of malicious hacking software used by elite Russian spies, Reuters reported, citing statements by senior US law enforcement officials.
The agency notes that this provides insight into the decisive battle in the digital sphere between the two cyber superpowers.
According to the statements, the technical experts of The FBI has identified and disabled malware used by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSS) against an undisclosed number of computers in the US. They hope the move will deal a crushing blow to one of Russia’s main cyber-espionage programs.
“We believe this is their first-class espionage tool,” one senior US official told reporters before the information was released. He noted that Washington hopes the operation will “uproot it from the virtual battlefield.”
The US official identified the FSB hackers behind the malware as the infamous hacking group known as “Turla”. According to him, it has operated for two decades against various NATO-related targets.
The US representative told reporters on condition of anonymity. Russian diplomats have not yet responded to a request for comment. Moscow has generally denied conducting activities related to cyberespionage, Reuters noted.
