FBI detects and contains cyberattack against one of its offices in New York, media reports | Informatic direction

The FBI contained an attack on its computer systems, reported CNN last Friday.

The US federal law enforcement agency told the news agency that the incident involved an FBI computer system used in investigations into child sexual exploitation images.

Two sources told CNN that the attack involved the FBI’s local office in New York, one of the agency’s largest offices. The origin of the hacking incident is still under investigation, according to a source.

As noted TechCrunch, this is not the first time that the FBI has been compromised. In November 2021, a cybercriminal compromised the FBI’s external email system to send thousands of spam emails warning of a fake cyberattack to hundreds of thousands of organizations.

The FBI is one of the main agencies in the country – along with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) – in the fight against cybercriminals. In January, the FBI revealed that its personnel broke into the Hive ransomware gang’s computer network last summer, captured its decryption keys, and offered them to victims around the world to decrypt their scrambled data.
