Faulty lighting and traffic lights: Large-scale power outage in Graz: 4,500 households without electricity

Street lighting and traffic lights failed last night: several streets in the Graz district of Geidorf, around the University of Graz up to Wifi, but also in the city center (area Sporgasse-Mehlplatz-Burggasse) were affected by a Power failure shortly after 9.00pm on a Tuesday evening. Less than an hour later, most of the electricity was flowing again.

The trigger was a technical problem in the Körösistraße substation, according to Energie Graz: “This then triggered a cascade effect,” says spokesman Joachim Hirtenfellner. 47 transformer stations failed. Once the problem was solved, these were subsequently put back on the network, the last ones around 11pm – like Wifi. “We are proceeding on an urgent basis,” Hirtenfellner says. Addresses vacant overnight are placed at the bottom.

Initially it was assumed a fire in a transformer cabin, as reported by the Directorate of the State Police. However, professional firefighters later determined that there was only minimal smoke development due to a transformer burning through the electrical system.
