Dr. Anthony Fauci asked New York and other dissenting Democratic states on Monday to accept the COVID-19 vaccine once it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said he “disagrees” that Governor Andrew Cuomo and other state leaders need to conduct their own internal reviews before distributing a vaccine to the public.
“Hopefully I can ask them to say yes, they can see the data, that everyone should look at the data, there is nothing wrong with that, that they trust the process because it is a solid process,” Fauci told the Washington Post.
Fauci said that while he “doesn’t blame them for wondering what’s going on,” he fears that the states’ own reviews could delay the process of distributing the vaccine to their residents.
“I hope that if they do, they do it in an expeditious manner that doesn’t delay anything,” Fauci said.
President Donald Trump said last week that he would not deliver the vaccine to New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo insisted that an independent commission review the vaccine because he does not trust the current administration.
