In “Fatherland” a young girl rebels against the mustiness of the post-war years: a director remembers her childhood.

The autobiographical drama “Fatherland” by filmmaker Petra Seeger will be shown on TV for the first time on September 13th. Arte shows it at prime time at 8:15 p.m. It is the first feature film by the Cologne native, who also wrote the screenplay. Seeger previously devoted himself primarily to documentaries.

A moving look back

In “Fatherland” she deals with her childhood and youth in male-dominated post-war Germany in the 50s and 60s. The protagonist’s family photos and film footage even come from Seeger’s personal archive. At the center of the action is 48-year-old Marie, who is in a creative and life crisis. Her husband can’t really understand the director’s block and advises her to try a new script.

But there is a lack of inspiration! One morning, Marie discovers a box of memorabilia from her childhood in front of the door. They take them on a disturbing journey into the past, which causes them to increasingly neglect their current family life.

Marie was still a child when her mother became seriously ill with cancer and died. Her father, a passionate photographer, is now a single parent and torn apart by grief, unable to cope with the situation. He treats her brother and especially her with military severity.

Whirlwind with a mind of its own

The spirited Marie reacts rebelliously and is ultimately sent to a Catholic girls’ boarding school. The nuns also exercise authority there. However, Marie doesn’t let herself get down and knows exactly how to resist the entire system.

Society may expect her to be obedient and smile prettily for the camera. However, Marie herself wants to be behind the camera and take control.

“Fatherland” was awarded the Rheingold Audience Prize at the German Film Festival in Ludwigshafen in 2021. The main roles are played by Margarita Broich, Bernhard Schütz, Matti Schmidt-Schaller and Eric Langner. Feliizia Trube, Momo Beier and Stella Holzapfel embody the character of Marie as a child and teenager.

“Fatherland” is also available until September 19th in the Arte media library ready to stream.
