It was January 16 at Nucera college in Nice. Anthony, 34, a parent of students, delivery driver on disability, shouts in the assistant principal’s office. Hands placed on the desk, he tries to intimidate his interlocutor: “I’m a gypsy. What are you waiting for? Let me give you a head-butt.” His 14-year-old daughter left her class in the middle of sex education with his consent. “He’s dead. I’m going to put him in misery”, Anthony shouts. Originally, he was summoned because of the two-day exclusion of his son, guilty of having cyber-harassed a student. Another subject of contention: the sex education course.
The Academy Inspectorate asked the management of the establishment to file a complaint. Arrested, placed in custody then released under judicial supervision – against the advice of the prosecution – Anthony appeared Tuesday evening in criminal court for an offense punishable by five years in prison created in 2021: “Act of intimidation against any person participating in the execution of a public service mission, in order to obtain for oneself or for others a total or partial exemption or a differentiated application of the rules which govern the operation of said service.”
Regarding sex education in class, the defendant admits: “It didn’t bother me too much, but a little nonetheless. My daughter was shocked. Some students used crude words. She’s still playing Mickey!” “Isn’t it better for a teacher to teach a teenager than friends or social networks?”remarks President Marion Menot.
Dialogue renewed
As a civil party, the principal deputy does not seek any damages: “This matter has already gone far enough.” He is pleased that this irascible father quickly regretted his behavior and apologized. In her indictment, prosecutor Charline Hamon, satisfied that dialogue has been renewed between the family and the establishment, above all defends the main principles of the school of the Republic “free, open-minded, neutral, secular and obligatory”: “The aim of these courses is to open the mind, against community reflexes, to help young people to emancipate themselves, not to encourage them to debauchery.” Three months of suspended prison time and a citizenship training course are required to punish Anthony’s intolerable behavior. Me Gérard Baudoux invokes gypsy culture in his client’s defense: “He lectures his son who behaved badly in the principal’s office but on the subject of sexuality, there is a blockage.” Reassured by the measured words of his opponents, he in turn recalls that “school must be a sanctuary.
“It will not happen again”, promised the schoolgirl’s father. The court followed the requisitions and sentenced the impulsive but repentant father to a three-month suspended prison sentence and a citizenship course.
