Father Sacrifices Life to Save Son: Heroic Drowning Rescue at West Mersea Beach

On June 11, 30-year-old David Cole died. The father of two lost his life when he saved his three-year-old son from drowning.

The incident took place on a beach in West Mersea in the British city of Essex, where the family of four was on holiday.

According to BBC the 30-year-old made sure to keep his son’s head above water. He himself drowned during the heroic deed.

– Absolutely awful

Now his wife, Katie Macdonald, is praising the rescue crew from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

She describes the efforts as “incredible”.

Macdonald, from Hertford in Hertfordshire, was left on the beach with the couple’s one-year-old and witnessed the tragedy.

– Not being able to do anything and feeling helpless… It was difficult. It was absolutely terrible, she tells the broadcaster.

Had it not been for the rescue team, she believes her three-year-old son could also have lost his life.

– They were extremely good at taking care of the three-year-old in the water, while also trying to save my girlfriend.

– He is a hero

It was two lifeguards and a person on a paddle board who first went into the sea to help. The RNLI rescue team arrived minutes later.

The BBC reports that the air ambulance also took part.

– Dave was fantastic. He was the best dad ever. He was like a big kid himself. All he wanted was to have fun with our children.

She also praises the child’s father, who sacrificed his own life to save the three-year-old.

– He is a hero. A hero in the sense that he put his son before himself – and saved his life, praises his wife.

Praise the rescue team

Now Macdonald has created a krone rolling on the collection site GoFundMe. The money will go in full to the RNLI rescue service, as well as the children’s ward at Colchester Hospital.

“My boyfriend and our son got into trouble in the sea at the beach in West Mersea. The lifeboat arrived within minutes and did everything they could to save my Dave, but unfortunately he was unconscious and died on the beach.

In Dave’s memory I want to raise money for the RNLI crew from Mersea. I also want to give money to the children’s ward at Colchester. They have been absolutely incredible and looked after my family while we were grieving the loss of Dave. They were also absolutely fantastic with my three-year-old son,” the Macdonalds write on their website.

Rick Boreham, an RNLI volunteer, says the crew are “incredibly grateful”.

– The volunteer crew is really touched that a fundraiser has been set up. Katie is very welcome to visit our station at any time and will receive a warm welcome,” Boreham told the BBC.
