Father Maikel (28) in deep mourning, first wife and now son deceased | Abroad

Maikel and his brother Jordi found it difficult to accommodate the death of their mother. Because his mother always enjoyed the fireworks spectacle that Maikel showed during the turn of the year, he also wanted to shoot a few flares up this New Year’s Eve. “I had just asked not to set off fireworks,” father Patrick tells Het Laatste Nieuws.

Something went wrong while shooting the arrows. According to the police, one of the flares faltered. Maikel went to see what exactly went wrong and at that moment the fireworks exploded in his face. According to his brother, Maikel was knocked over seven meters away when the fireworks went off unexpectedly. The emergency services arrived on the spot, but assistance was no longer of use. “The artery in his neck was hit and it was fatal,” said Father Patrick. This Thursday he will say goodbye to his son together with family and some friends.

‘Incomprehensible’

His father calls the incident incomprehensible. Sometimes things went wrong, but his son always managed to solve that properly and safely. According to relatives, the flares came from a Bulgarian online store. There he bought his stock every year.

People lash out on social media. The incident is called ‘reckless and irresponsible’.
