Hans Hateboer has been in quarantine for nine days in Bergamo, Italy, the epicenter of Europe in the corona crisis. Father André is concerned about his son, who is in a city where four thousand people have already been infected.
Atalanta Bergamo has a dream season with a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, but that is not what it is all about in the Italian town at the moment. The funeral directors can no longer keep up with the number of deaths. “What happens there is no longer normal. If you read the stories, you are still worried,” Hateboer senior tells in conversation with Daily newspaper of the North.
His son has been quarantined since last Wednesday, but André knows that the right back is in good hands with the club, where he is with ten other players. “They have chosen not to go home. They waste time during the day with gaming, a little ping-pong and they are in the gym. And Hans has all like-minded people around him. The togetherness is great, the atmosphere is great.”
Still, the concerns are there now that he cannot see his son for the time being. “We last saw each other four weeks ago. Nobody could have imagined that it would get so bad.”
