Marcos Martínez was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, fatally crashing head-on into the vehicle of Joe Stubblefield, who was traveling with his 7-year-old son in New York.

Stubblefield, father of seven and resident of westchester county of New York, died in the car accident over the weekend, just a day after seeing one of the football teams of his children’s high school won a sectional championship.

The 52-year-old father was driving on a Putnam County highway Saturday night with her 7-year-old son when another motorist crossed the double yellow line and hit her car head-on, authorities said.

Stubblefield was pronounced dead at the scene and Martinez was taken into custody, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. The child suffered injuries and was reported in stable condition.

Martinez, 56, of Hopewell Junction (Dutchess County), was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, reported New York Post. All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

“He was such a loving father to his seven children who are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” wrote their loved ones on a page of GoFundMe which seeks to raise money for the distraught family.

The day before his death Stubblefield watched his teenage son Erik and Haldane High School win a Section I football championship, a family member said, according to The Highlands Current. Now The team will dedicate the regional game they will play this Friday in their quest for a state championship to him.

The authorities remember that there is zero tolerance for drivers who drive at excess speed and/or under the influence of alcohol and drugs..

Traffic accidents are a major challenge throughout New York State. This despite “Vision Zero” road safety plan created in 2014 by then-new Mayor Bill de Blasio, who promised to make the city safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists with a goal of zero deaths by 2024. According to NYPD, Cyclist deaths increased 260% in the first six months of 2023 and 325% since the implementation of the “Vision Zero” plan in 2014. In many cases the drivers flee.
