Father beaten to death Carlo: ‘The loss remains, the sadness is intense’

Carlo was severely beaten in Mallorca in July. He died in hospital from his injuries four days later. Six 18 and 19-year-old suspects are now in pre-trial detention. Four of them are suspected of being involved in Carlo’s death.

Carlo’s father told his story tonight in the TV program Opsporing Verzocht because he hopes that witnesses will still report.

In the program he tells how Carlo was looking forward to the friends trip to Mallorca. “He came to have a nice chat. He was really looking forward to leaving. A bit of cards, playing football on the beach, being lazy.”

Marriage and children

Carlo was doing well, his father says. “It all went perfectly. He trained three or four times a week in the gym, ate healthy, drank very moderately. He was often the bob. They sometimes called him: the godfather. He took care of everyone.” He was also ready for the next step with his girlfriend. Get married, maybe kids.

But it didn’t come to that. It all went terribly wrong on the first night in Mallorca. After a confrontation with a number of young people from Hilversum, Carlo was severely beaten.

The next time he saw his son, he was in a deep coma in the hospital. It looked bad. Carlo could become severely handicapped, but also die. “On the one hand, you hope it will be okay. But on the other hand: if he lives, how does he want that? It is of course very difficult if you have to make such a decision for your son. I’m glad that I didn’t have to.”

Carlo eventually died of his injuries at the age of 27. And that still hurts every day, says his father. “The lack remains. We wake up with it and go to bed with it. The sadness is intense. It is not nothing when you lose your son at the age of 27.”

Carlo’s father has a clear goal with his story: to find all the witnesses and all the videos that are around the fatal abuse. Because not all witnesses have come forward, says a police spokesperson.

For example, the police are still looking for two girls who squatted with Carlo after the assault and for two boys who are making a video. The police also showed images of witnesses that the police are looking for.

Carlo’s father hopes that she and others will report. “Take your responsibility. No matter how young you are. You wouldn’t want it done to someone you know? Who do you love? Your brother, sister, father, mother. Think about that. It’s not snitching. We’re not talking about shoplifting here, we’re talking about something super serious. Get over that fear and help us get the perpetrators punished.”
