Father Arrested for Shooting Driver Who Killed His Son in Tragic Accident
PERSON COUNTY, N.C. – In a heartbreaking turn of events, a father has been taken into custody for shooting and killing a driver who hit and killed his son with a truck. The incident occurred on Monday morning along Dink Ashley Road near Ed Brooks Road in Timberlake, according to the Person County Sheriff’s Office.
The father, identified as Chad Woods, and his teenage son were walking back to their house after their car ran out of gas when tragedy struck. A Department of Correction truck driven by Jeffrey McKay crashed into Woods’ son, resulting in the boy’s untimely death.
“He was a good person. He was a real good person,” the boy’s brother tearfully shared with ABC11. “He wanted to be an IT technician. He was doing well and wanted to make a positive impact in people’s lives. He was a people person.”
McKay immediately stopped his truck and called 911 to report the accident. However, the situation took a shocking turn when Woods pulled out a gun and shot McKay. He then discarded the weapon into a nearby pond before getting into McKay’s truck and driving home, leaving his son and McKay in the street.
Witnesses described Woods as distraught and inconsolable. ”He was just out of it, going off and stuff. He kept saying, ‘He just killed my son. He killed my son,'” Woods’ father, Lawrence Clayborn, revealed.
Law enforcement officials later apprehended Woods, who now faces charges of second-degree murder and larceny of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 21.
Sgt. Kevin Morris of the Person County Sheriff’s Office expressed his condolences, stating, “This is kind of a first. I’ve been to people struck by cars and I’ve been to shootings, but I haven’t ever had this happen at the same time. It’s a sad situation for all the families involved.”
