Bulawayo: West Deed’s Tagnarine Chanderpaul and Shivnarine Chanderpaul with a rare record of father and son scoring double centuries in Test cricket.
A rare record was created when Tagnarin scored a double century in the first cricket test against Zimbabwe. Tagnarine, the opener, remained unbeaten on 207 runs off 467 balls, including three sixes and 13 fours. Shivnarine Chanderpaul played 164 matches for West Indies and scored 11867 runs. The highest score was 203 against South Africa in 2005. This is the third Test of Tagnarine’s career.
Shivnarine-Tagnerine were preceded by father and son duo Hanif Muhammad and Shuaib Muhammad of Pakistan who scored double centuries in Tests. India’s Lala Amarnath-Mohinder Amarnath, Vijay Manjrekar-Sanjay Manjrekar, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi-Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi are the father-son duos who have scored centuries in Tests.
In the first Test, Tagnarine and fellow captain Craig Brathwaite shared a record for the opening wicket. The duo shared a record of 336 runs at the Bulawayo Sports Club. They broke Windies’ 33-year-old record of opening partnership. Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes broke the record of 298 runs against England in 1990 at St John’s. The ninth highest opening partnership in Tests was born yesterday.
South Africa’s Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie’s 415 in the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh in 2008 is the highest opening partnership.
Brathwaite scored 12th century of his Test career with 182 runs. Tagnarine, playing the third Test of his career, remained unbeaten with a double century.
Windies declared 447 runs for 6 in the first innings. When the information was finally received on the third day, Sibambwe had scored 84 runs for the loss of two wickets.
