Father and daughter from Mr. Frank Visser must pay neighbors €27,650

The case of plane spotter Piet and his daughter Ria can be seen in February 2020 in mr. Frank Visser makes a statement. The two enlist the help of the former driving judge because they have been at odds with their neighbors, Wesley and Manon for years. They placed a container with construction rubble in front of their house, which obstructs their view. In addition, Piet has been stuck with two fences in his stomach for a long time. They were removed by the neighbor and not put back properly.

Ultimately, the episode ends with the television judge’s decision: Piet and Ria have to remove some concrete blocks next to their neighbors’ driveway. If they do not do this, they must pay Manon and Wesley 50 euros per day that they do not comply with the ruling, up to a maximum of 10,000 euros. In addition, they must also tackle the fence in which asbestos has been found. Otherwise they run the risk of having to pay 200 euros per day. Finally, master Visser also ruled that a few windows that are too close to the boundary of the property should be made opaque by the duo to avoid a fine of 50 euros per day.

All’s well that ends well? Not quite. Father Piet announces immediately after the verdict that he will not comply with the imposed rules and eventually only removes a few concrete blocks. The fence will be replaced, but much later than it should have been. Manon and Wesley therefore go to court. They demand 32,650 euros from their neighbors, plus payment of legal and other costs.

Erik Doornbos, the lawyer who has taken over Piet and Ria, finds an absurd amount. According to him, there are ‘serious flaws’ in the conclusion of the agreement that the participants signed prior to the program, he tells the newspaper. “It does not feel good that such high amounts can immediately be involved when participating in a television program,” says Doornbos. “The bottom line is that Piet at one point called out ‘then we’ll call the driving judge’, after which his daughter sent an email. They were called back within two hours and they came by a day later.”

Piet and Ria’s lawyer also claims that there was no form of aftercare and that part of the conviction was motivated by the viewing figures. “It is annoying if you have lost, but it is in everyone’s interest that the ruling is complied with as best as possible”, responds Sander Terstegge, editor-in-chief at mr. Frank Visser makes a statement on the case. “All kinds of people participate in our program, but they are all legally capable of making their own case.”

The judge who reviewed the case agrees with him. However, he finds the fine on the high side and therefore deducts 5000 euros. Piet and Ria now have 27,650 euros plus interest that they have to transfer to Manon and Wesley, and 1000 euros in costs incurred by the neighbors. In addition, they are also another 2924 euros poorer due to all the legal costs.
