The statue for singer Pierre Kartner, who died last year, is still pending. His son Walter said this on Wednesday The Telegraph. The relatives of Father Abraham think it is too recently to honor him with a statue.

“It’s all still so fresh,” says Walter. “That is why I have asked the people who are committed to a statue of my father to postpone the placement and unveiling on a square in Breda by a year.”

“I don’t see myself being happy for the time being at such a special moment, which should be a bit festive. Both the initiators and the municipality fully understand that. They respect my request to park the project for a while.”

Walter would actually prefer that the statue depict not only his father, but also his mother. “My mother should certainly not be forgotten either,” says Walter. “I would love to see a statue of them both, holding hands.” The gravestone with his father’s name has now been placed.

Kartner died of cancer

Kartner died a year ago at the age of 87 from complications of bone cancer. Under his alias Father Abraham he scored a number of mega hits, such as The Smurf Song in The Little Café at the Harbour.

Both songs became world famous and appeared in various languages. Kartner also wrote the song I’m in Love (Sha-la-lie), with which Sieneke represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010. In 2000, Kartner received a royal honor.

In the last few years before his death, Kartner no longer appeared in public.
