Fatalities Rise as Northern India Braces for More Torrential Rains

At least 12 people have died in the past two days as torrential rains hit several districts in northern India. The Meteorological Authority predicted more rain in the coming days.

The Indian “NDT” network reported that the meteorological department predicted heavy rains in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir. And the Meteorological Authority indicated that a western disturbance prevailed over northern India, which led to heavy rains yesterday in several regions, including Delhi.

The accumulation of water caused traffic jams in several areas of the Indian capital. Delhi had 153 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, which is the highest amount of rain in one day in July since 1982.

A woman died in Delhi after the roof of her house collapsed, while four other people died in rain-related accidents in Rajasthan. A woman and her daughter died in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday morning after their house collapsed due to heavy rains. Three members of one family also died in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh in a similar accident. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, two soldiers were killed after being swept away by floods in Poonch district on Saturday evening.
