Fatalities and injuries in attacks in Afghanistan, including at the MSF clinic

In two attacks, more than 20 people are believed to have been killed and dozens more injured in Afghanistan. First there was an attack on a MSF maternity hospital in the capital Kabul, later a suicide bomber blew up at a funeral in another place in the east of the country.

Armed men attacked the maternity hospital early this morning. Explosives were also detonated in the process. According to initial reports, there are at least eight killed and an unknown number injured.

Afghan security forces surrounded the building and safely released an unknown number of women and babies.

Police officer funeral killed

Later this morning, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the funeral of a local police chief. That was near the city of Jalalabad, also in the east of the country, near the border with Pakistan. At least twelve people were killed and dozens injured in the attack. Other sources speak of 45 deaths.

The funeral was attended by many regional officials and an Afghan Member of Parliament.

Attacks have been regularly committed by IS in Afghanistan in recent months. It is not known whether these terrorists are also responsible for the two attacks this morning.

Taliban deny involvement

The Taliban are also active in the east of the country, but they have said that they are certainly not behind the attacks.

Yesterday, the Afghan authorities announced they had arrested three high-ranking IS people, including a regional leader. A few other ISIS fighters were killed in a police action last week.
