Four people were killed on Sunday when they were crossing a railway line and were hit by a train. Three others were injured in the collision and had to be hospitalized. Nothing has been announced about their condition.
According to emergency services, three people died on the spot and a fourth person died in hospital after cardiac arrest. The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. near Montmeló, a Spanish municipality about twenty kilometers north of Barcelona. The victims are said to have crossed the track in a place where this is prohibited, close to a bend.
Spanish media report that a music festival was held in the area on Sunday evening. “We have looked for possible other victims, but have not found anyone else. We also helped evacuate the area and take the injured to the ambulances,” the regional fire brigade wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Train traffic suspended
Emergency services sent nine ambulances and a helicopter. The approximately 170 people on board the train were unharmed. Train traffic along part of the line was suspended after the fatal accident.
Spanish Transport Minister Raquel Sánchez offered her condolences to the families of the victims and expressed her support on social media for the aid workers dealing with “this very difficult situation”.
