Fatal syndrome discovered in Denmark

At Rigshospitalet in Denmark, two doctors have discovered a new and deadly disease that has previously only been registered in the USA.

The disease goes by the name Vexas syndrome, and mainly affects men over 50 years, writes Danish BT. Symptoms may include anemia, skin changes and pain in the nose and ears.

American researchers

The disease was first discovered by an American research team a year ago.

– So far we have identified five Danish patients with the syndrome, but there are already more to be examined, so we expect that there are more, says Jakob Werner Nielsen, doctor at Rigshospitalet, to the newspaper.

Frames men

It is believed that the disease only affects men because the syndrome is linked to a gene that sits on the X chromosome, of which men only have one.

According to American research, the disease is considered to have a high mortality rate. However, this may be related to the fact that the diagnosis is new, and that there is therefore a lack of treatment, the newspaper writes.
