“I was doing security and I guess “someone got drunk and stabbed him,” said the victim’s brother, James Hopkins. “It’s a club and he did a regular shift there at his job.”
Officers found a mortally wounded Hopkins sitting on a bench outside the bar-restaurant on Graham Ave. near Johnson Ave. at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Feb. 10.
“The interesting thing here is that you have between 20 and 30 customers in this bar. We interviewed numerous [personas]”said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. “Some of them finished their drinks before walking past the victim, who was sitting on a bench bleeding to death. Sad situation: at least call 911.”
The attacker plunged his knife two inches into Hopkins’ neck and also stabbed him under his right armpit, plunging the knife more than 4 inches deep, Kenny said. He also suffered a stab wound to the chest.
His co-workers bravely administered first aid, but his injuries were too serious, Kenny added. Last night police released photos of the man they believe killed Hopkins. The restaurant has not commented.

In New York City The number of stabbings and cuts continues to rise. There were 4,493 cases in 2023 until early December, an increase of 6% compared to the same period in 2022. In parallel arrests for knife crimes have increased almost 30%.
The figures do not surprise experts because knives are easier and cheaper to get than a gun. However, they represent a more brutal attack because they involve more physical approach to the victim.
A previous NYPD report warned last August that fatal stabbings had risen 29% that year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.
In early February, a Hispanic man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a co-worker in an early morning incident at a restaurant in New York’s Westchester County.
Also this month, a Mexican gang member was stabbed to death by a rival in a bar near his home in the Bronx. Then a 26-year-old man died in a morning shooting outside a “Kennedy Fried Chicken” franchise restaurant also in that county, the NYPD reported.
In a similar case, in mid-January a worker at a construction site in Manhattan stabbed a co-worker three times during a fight over loud music, the NYPD said. Days later an angry customer shot another over a spilled drink at a restaurant in Upper Manhattan.
