Fatal Skydiving Accident in France: Pilot Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter

In July 2018, 40-year-old skydiver Nicolas Gali was fatally shot in mid-air moments after jumping from a plane.

The pilot, whose name has not been released, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a French criminal court on Tuesday and given a suspended sentence.

The Parachuting School Association of the Southern Pyrenees, which employed the pilot, was fined €20,000.

As the newspaper “Le Parisien” reports, immediately after Nikolas jumped out of the plane, its pilot started descending towards the runway.

The fatal impact is said to have occurred about 10 seconds after Nicholas jumped. It should be noted that the parachutist had a so-called “wingsuit” parachute, which resembles the attributes of a flying squirrel.

Before the parachutist jumped from the plane, the plane’s flight path was not discussed, the newspaper writes.

Referring to the court hearing held on September 19, the lawyer of the victim’s relatives expressed regret for “gross carelessness or negligence”.

The court also pointed out the lack of communication between the victim and the pilot.

Since the accident, security measures have been increased and mandatory briefings have been introduced.
