In a devastating incident on Sunday night, two individuals were shot and killed during a Father’s Day barbecue in Roseland, according to the police. Additionally, one person is currently in critical condition, while two others are in fair condition.

The first victim, a 37-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. The second victim, a 33-year-old man, was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the neck but was later pronounced dead.

A 27-year-old man was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Furthermore, a 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition.

The incident took place at the 9900 block of South Princeton Avenue near Wendell Smith Park. Police have cordoned off the area, and the investigation is currently ongoing. According to Chicago Police Department spokesperson Tom Ahern, families had gathered in the park when a car drove up and opened fire.

As ambulances departed, several individuals were seen removing a portable, blue tent from the scene. However, the condition of the victims could not be immediately confirmed by the police present.

The victims, all young adults, were taken to various hospitals, as stated by 5th District Commander Tyrone Pendarvis. Detectives are actively canvassing the area, searching for any surveillance footage that may aid in the investigation.

Authorities believe that the gunshots originated from a dark-colored sedan, although this has yet to be definitively confirmed. Commander Pendarvis expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “It’s unfortunate today that this occurred because it’s a fine day of people just enjoying their family activity. But violence prevails in the city.”

Tragically, this shooting in Roseland was not an isolated incident. Earlier on Sunday morning, at least 23 people were shot, with one fatality, during a Juneteenth celebration at a strip mall near Willowbrook in southeast DuPage County.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the smell of barbecue still lingered in Roseland as neighbors, sitting on their porches, recounted hearing the shots around 8 p.m. One witness, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed to have heard approximately 100 shots and stated, “That wasn’t no handgun.”

An elderly woman, waiting for her son and grandson to return home, confirmed that they were present at the celebration but fortunately unharmed. She shared that the Father’s Day celebration has been a tradition in the neighborhood since the 1960s.

Throughout the night, fireworks illuminated the sky as neighbors stood together in shock and grief. Meanwhile, one man sat on the sidewalk, his head between his legs, undoubtedly overwhelmed by the tragic events that unfolded during what should have been a joyous occasion.

The community of Roseland and the city of Chicago mourn the loss of two lives and pray for the swift recovery of those injured. As investigations continue, it is a stark reminder of the persistent violence that plagues our society and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address it.
