Fatal Shooting at Bronx Subway Station Leaves One Dead, Five Injured – Suspect at Large

One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting that occurred Monday at a subway station in the Bronx, authorities reported.

The shooter remained at large after the incident that occurred around 4:38 p.m., police said.

A thirty-four-year-old man was killed, authorities said.

A Fire Department spokesperson described four of the injured as serious.

The station where the shooting occurred is located in The Bronx, at the intersection of Mount Eden and Jerome avenues. And the shooting happened on the northbound line 4 platform.

A police chief posted a message on social media reporting the incident.

“HAPPENING NOW: We are on the scene of an ongoing investigation at the Mt. Eden Ave. station on the @MTA 4 line in the Bronx. Please avoid the area of Jerome Ave between Inwood Ave and Townsend Ave at @NYPD44Pct. Please use alternate routes and expect traffic in the area,” wrote Assistant Commissioner for Operations Kaz Daughtry.

The shooting would have started when a train arrived at the station and two groups of young people who were having a dispute continued the fight on the platform, according to the first police investigations.

“We don’t believe it was a random shooting. We don’t believe it was an individual shooting indiscriminately,” said Chief Michael Kemper, Chief of Traffic. They were “two groups fighting on a train.”

It is not clear whether the dead and wounded were all part of the fighting groups or if some were passengers who were on the platform.

At this time the police are looking for a suspect and posted a message on social networks requesting information from the public.

“If you have any information about today’s shooting in the Bronx on the @mta 4 train line at the Mt. Eden station, where 6 victims were shot, including 1 dead, text @NYPDTips or call 800 -577-TIPS. All calls are confidential,” the NYPD message reads.

Among the injured are two women and three men. Women are 14 and 29 years old, and men are 15, 28 and 71 years old.

“This is not the norm. That’s why we’re all here. Outraged. A subway shooting like this is “extremely rare and unacceptable.” The bigger question is why do people feel emboldened to pull out guns and shoot? “There must be consequences when arrests are made,” the police chief concluded.

At the moment there are no arrests and the investigation is underway.
