Coroner Garth Eggenberger confirms according to the CBC that some of those who were on board a plane that crashed near Fort Smith have died.

– At the present time, I can confirm that there have been deaths, but we will not provide more information until next of kin have been notified.

It is currently unknown how many people were in the Northwestern Air leasing plane, but the plane can take 19 passengers in total.

Rescue crews from the army and the police made it to the wreckage on snowmobiles, while others from the emergency services parachuted out of a Hercules plane, writes NTB.

The plane was on a charter flight with workers on their way to a mine. It went down a little over a kilometer from the end of the runway.

– The local community is in shock. We are very close-knit here, says Mayor Dianna Korol in the small community of Fort Smith.

Canadian authorities already have investigators on their way to the small town of about 2,500 inhabitants.
