Yesterday’s fatal motorcycle accident near an industrial estate in Barneveld probably happened during a street race. “This violent incident appears to be directly related to illegal street racing,” Mayor Van der Tak said Omroep Gelderland.
A 32-year-old man from Bunschoten was killed in the collision on the Grote Bosweg. Another 24-year-old motorcyclist was injured. Tonight, according to the broadcaster, about a hundred people came together on site of the accident. Flowers were laid and candles were burned.
Several entrepreneurs told the regional broadcaster that the road and the business park have long been known for illegal races. “They are busy here every Saturday and Sunday,” says an employee of a flooring store who wishes to remain anonymous.
“Racing, stunts, driving on the rear wheel at 180 kilometers per hour. It’s too crazy for words. In the summer, pizzas are even delivered in the evening.”
In the past, things went wrong several times around the industrial estate. Last year, three young people on motorcycles were injured in an accident. In 2021, a teenager was hit by a buggy.
Mayor Van der Tak says that illegal street races have indeed taken place around the business park in the past. “Temporary measures were also taken,” he says.
‘Undesirable’
According to the mayor, there have been no reports of street racing in the past year. No reports resulted from surveillance by the police and boas.
Due to the fatal accident, the municipality is considering whether additional measures need to be taken. Van der Tak: “We will do this together with the police, boas, traffic experts and entrepreneurs, and if necessary with neighboring municipalities. Because this is obviously undesirable.”
