One person was killed and two people were injured in a knife and hammer attack in central Paris late last night. According to Interior Minister Darmanin, the attacker was “courageously” overpowered by officers shortly after his actions.
The attacks took place near the Eiffel Tower, around the Quai de Grenelle, around 9 p.m. The fatal victim was a German national and had been stabbed from behind on the Bir Hakeim Bridge. A little further on, the perpetrator attacked two others with a hammer. He was then knocked out by officers with an electroshock weapon.
Radicale islamist
The perpetrator is a 26-year-old man with French nationality and is known as a radical Islamist. Minister Darmanin says that the man is on a surveillance list of the security services and has psychiatric disorders. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for preparing a terrorist attack.
When he was arrested yesterday, he shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is great), the minister said. According to Darmanin, he also told officers that he was upset “because so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and Palestine.”
Prime Minister Borne has expressed her condolences to the victims and their loved ones. She says France will never give in to terrorism.
