Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Brooklyn Leaves One Woman Dead, Another Injured

NEW YORK – One woman was killed and another injured after they were struck at a Brooklyn intersection by a hit-and-run driver, according to New York City police.

The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. in Bushwick at the intersection of Eldert Street and Knickerbocker Avenue, police said. Surveillance video obtained by our sister network NBC New York showed a blue van speeding up, then swerving to avoid a red car in its path and, in doing so, running over two women before crashing. .

Shortly after, the security video shows an NYPD patrol car very close to the SUV, with its emergency lights on. Police were in pursuit of the vehicle after officers attempted to stop the driver for a traffic violation, according to police, but the driver pulled over.

A 71-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Wycoff Hospital. The other woman, 44, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and is expected to survive. The victims have not been identified.

Witnesses said that after hitting the women and causing an accident, the driver of the van jumped out and ran to the Halsey Street underground station. The police were looking for the driver, but they did not give a description of what the man looked like.

An investigation is ongoing.
