The accident in Surhuisterveen that took place on Tuesday was a head-on collision between two cars.
A driver, a man from the municipality of Achtkarspelen, was killed. A woman and two children, also from Achtkarspelen, were also in the car. They, like the occupants of the other car, were seriously injured and were taken to hospital.
It is not yet clear exactly how the accident happened. Police are still investigating and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
