BARNEVELD The driver of one of the two passenger cars was killed in a head-on collision on the Scherpenzeelseweg in Barneveld on Saturday evening. The two occupants of the other car were injured. Because they had run away from the scene of the accident, they were arrested by the police.
The collision took place shortly after half past nine, in a bend near Museum farm De Grote Glind. According to a witness, it was a gigantic blow: the engine block of one of the cars shot through dozens of meters.
Several ambulances, the fire brigade and the trauma helicopter were quickly on the scene. The woman came from the direction of Barneveld. She did not survive the head-on collision. Her identity has yet to be officially established.
The driver and passenger of the other car, a black Volkswagen with Polish license plates from the direction of Scherpenzeel, were injured. The nature of those injuries is not yet clear. Police suspect that both the driver and passenger were under the influence of alcohol. Blood is taken from the driver at the hospital. In any case, it is clear that the two had run away from the scene of the accident and were therefore arrested by the police.
The Traffic Accident Analysis (VOA) of the police has started an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The road will be closed to all traffic from the roundabout on Postweg for the next few hours.
