Two people were killed Tuesday as a result of floods caused by torrential rains that turned the streets of Istanbul into rivers, Turkish officials said.

The city’s governor’s office said two people died.

In turn, the Turkish emergency service confirmed that two people were killed on Tuesday and 4 others were missing due to floods in the northwestern city of Kirklareli.

According to media reports, the night storm partially submerged a metro station and forced the authorities to evacuate dozens of people from a public library, according to AFP.

Footage broadcast on television and spread on social media also showed flowing water dragging cars and stalls in the city’s markets.

It is noteworthy that the heavy rains fell after a dry summer that saw the level of water tanks drop in the city, which has a population of 16 million, to its lowest level in 9 years.
