Six people died and at least 68 were injured in a fire overnight at a home for the elderly in Milan, Italy’s emergency services said today, cited by Reuters, BTA reported.
A spokesman for the fire service confirmed to Reuters the death toll, adding that the fire had been extinguished and that an investigation had been launched into its cause. Three people were hospitalized in critical condition, 15 people with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and about 50 people with minor injuries.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, who arrived at the scene, told reporters that the fire was extinguished very quickly. Italian news agencies earlier reported that 81 people had been admitted to hospital, two of them in critical condition.
