Fatal Explosion of Experimental Hybrid Car During Trials in Italy

The National Research Council (NRC) said two researchers were killed after an experimental hybrid car exploded during trials in Italia. The victim died after suffering burns.

Reported AFP, Thursday (29/6/2023), firefighters are investigating the contents of two gas canisters in the vehicle. This gas cylinder is believed to be the cause of the explosion in the car that occurred last Friday (23/6).

NRC said Trainee Fulvio Filace, 25, died on Wednesday night. He fell into a coma after suffering third-degree burns on more than 70 percent of his body.

Another victim was researcher Maria Vittoria Prati (66) who died on Monday. Victim is a specialist in the study of emissions and the use of alternative fuels.

Prati was driving the car at the time of the incident. While Fielde sat in the passenger seat.

NRC expressed “sadness” and “disappointment” over the incident. NRC added that they were launching an internal investigation.

“The loss of two lives, even more so under such dramatic circumstances, had a profound impact on the scientific community throughout Italia,” he said.

According to the Italian news agency AGI, the Napoli prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the murder and fire. The prosecutor’s office has also seized the prototype of the vehicle.

The car was used as part of a European research project. It aims to test electric motors with batteries powered by solar panels in vehicles with internal combustion engines.
