The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded too the scene around 5:00 a.m. near Manchester Avenue. Initial reports indicate a black sedan and a gray cargo van collided in the express lanes. The impact was severe enough to eject a victim from one of the vehicles.
Adding to the tragedy, a further incident occurred moments later.According to Jose Ubaldo, a spokesperson for Metro Los Angeles, an out-of-service Metro Line 210 bus, traveling northbound on the 110 Freeway north of Century Boulevard, struck the ejected victim.
“At about 5:10 this morning, an out-of-service Metro bus Line 210 heading northbound on the 110 freeway north of Century Boulevard, struck a body that had been ejected from an earlier, non-Metro vehicle accident,” Ubaldo stated. “Metro extends its deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends.”
The severity of the incident prompted the CHP to issue a SigAlert at 5:33 a.m., entirely shutting down all northbound lanes of the freeway.This closure lasted for approximately two hours, causing significant delays and impacting the morning commute for thousands of drivers. The SigAlert was eventually canceled at 8:16 a.m.after the scene was cleared.
The CHP is currently investigating the cause of the initial collision.
