A mechanical breakdown ended in tragedy for the young Shannon Campbell, who was run over when the vehicle she was traveling in stopped on a highway in the Bronx (NYC) at dawn.
Campbell, 27, was a passenger in a vehicle that stalled inside the painted median separating lanes on the eastbound Bruckner Expressway just before 3 am Wednesday, authorities said.
The young woman got out of the disabled car and was walking into the right lane of the freeway, near Barretto Street, when she was hit by a 2019 Toyota Camry driven by a 61-year-old man. The impact threw Campbell north and into the center lane, according to NYPD.
The police were investigating if it was also hit by a second car who fled the scene. Campbell was found unconscious on the road, suffering from severe bodily trauma.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The unidentified driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and was uninjured. No arrests have been made and the investigation was ongoing, he reported. New York Post.
In addition to gun violencetraffic accidents are another big challenge for the new mayor Eric Adams, after a dismal legacy from his predecessor, Bill De Blasio. New York City has experienced a 35% increase in traffic accidents so far this year, stated NYPD in mid-April. At the end of that month there was a tragic streak in NYC at an average of one person killed by a run over every day.
