Fatal Amoeba Infection Claims Life of 15-Year-Old in Kerala, India

In the state of Kerala (India), a 15-year-old teenager died after being ingested by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, which caused brain damage. This parasite travels along the olfactory nerve to the brain and causes an irreversible infection.

About it informs News18.

State Health Minister Vina George noted that the young man became infected while swimming in a polluted reservoir in the Alappuzha region in the southeast of the country. As you know, Naegleria fowleri amoebas live in natural and artificial fresh water bodies at a temperature of 25-30 degrees Celsius. This is the fifth case of infection in the state. All infected patients have died.

Similar cases were also reported in various cities across the state in 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The main symptoms of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis are fever, headache, vomiting, and convulsions.

The Cursor wrote earlier that the European Center for Prevention and Control of Diseases is concerned that the number of cases of mosquito-borne diseases has increased significantly in Europe over the past year.

We also wrote that representatives of the Israeli Ministry of Health warned citizens about the spread of whooping cough in the country, an infectious bacterial disease that occurs most often in children, but is also recorded in adults.
