An incident occurred in a city in California, USA, where a Jewish man in his 60s died while fighting with pro-Palestinian protesters.
According to the Associated Press on the 7th (local time), the incident occurred in Thousand Oaks, a northwest suburb of Los Angeles (LA), around 3:20 pm on the 5th. At that time, Israeli supporters and Palestinian supporters held separate protests in this area, and it was discovered that a physical conflict occurred while the protesters were in close confrontation.
The police who responded to the report found Paul Kessler (69) lying on the scene bleeding from his head and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital. But Kessler died the next day.
According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, which was in charge of the incident, a 50-year-old pro-Palestinian protester remained at the scene. Mr. A reportedly stated to the police, “I participated in the fight with Kessler and called 911 after he fell.”
The sheriff’s office said they briefly detained Mr. A for questioning and also searched his home. Currently, Mr. A has been released.
Ventura County Coroner Dr. Christopher Young said an autopsy showed Kessler died from blunt force trauma to the head. Dr. Young explained that Kessler’s injuries appeared consistent with a fall. He also said Kessler’s left face was also injured. However, he added that it is currently unclear what caused his fall.
The sheriff’s office said they were receiving conflicting information from witnesses on both sides of the incident and had not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime. He went on to say that no one has been arrested and asked citizens to provide any video of the incident if they have any.
“It is unclear at this time exactly what occurred prior to the incident,” Sheriff Jim Freihoff said. “It is also unclear how many people were involved.”
Some witnesses said through media interviews, “Kessler and a man got into an argument. He also said, “The man hit Kessler with a loudspeaker and he collapsed from the impact.”
Regarding this, Sheriff Freihoff said, “I heard the eyewitness account,” and “the coroner also said that the injuries on Kessler’s face may have been caused by the loudspeaker.” However, he said, “It is currently unclear to what extent Kessler was injured as a result,” and that an investigation must confirm whether the impact was directly related to Kessler’s death.
“Please do not jump to conclusions and do not spread misinformation on social media, which can not only hinder our investigation but also cause unnecessary fear in our community,” he said.
