Fatal Accident on Zao Echo Line: Tragic Collision Results in Death and Injuries

Just after 11 a.m. on October 31st, a large truck and a passenger car collided on the Zao Echo Line, a mountain tourist road near Togatta Onsen, Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture, and both vehicles fell to the bottom of a cliff beside the road.

According to police, Shigemori Komido (42), a company employee from Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, who was driving the large truck in the accident, was trapped inside the vehicle and was rescued at around 5:30 p.m. He was confirmed dead.

In addition, a man in his 70s who was driving the car was unconscious and in critical condition, and a woman in her 60s who was a passenger in the car suffered serious injuries including broken ribs.

The Zao Echo Line is a 26-kilometer sightseeing road that crosses the Zao Mountain Range from east to west, connecting Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture, and Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture.

The scene is a one-lane road with a series of curves, and police are investigating the cause of the accident.
