NEW YORK — A woman who New York City Police said had the right of way as she crossed a Manhattan street Friday morning was struck and killed by an Access-A-Ride van.
Investigators say the 88-year-old woman was crossing the street in Chinatown around 11 a.m. when the driver of the pickup truck hit her. The collision occurred at the intersection of Canal and Allen streets.
The woman, not yet identified, was rushed by EMS personnel to Bellevue Hospital, where she died.
Police sources said the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police, is expected to face charges of failure to exercise due care and failure to yield.
Access-A-Ride vans are owned by the MTA but operated by contract employees, the president of NYC Transit said during a press conference. He said the agency would cooperate with the police investigation.
