An accident occurred in China in which six people suffocated and three of them died due to toxic gases released from a large pile of rotten tangerines.
According to various local media, including China’s state-run CCTV, the accident occurred in Changsha, Kaizhe District, Chongqing on the 26th. The site, which looked like a wasteland, had huge pits dug all over the place, and the inside was full of bright yellow tangerines.
Some of the casualties were workers hired to repair the pit. A worker was the first to enter the pit and suddenly lost consciousness. Residents who saw him came to the rescue and fell one after another. The rescue team dispatched after receiving the report immediately transported them to the hospital, but the three eventually died.
Videos released on social media such as Weibo showed people going down into a pit and struggling to climb up. There was footage of residents forcibly opening the mouth of an unconscious man and giving him first aid.

It is believed that the cause of this accident was toxic gases generated from rotting tangerines piled up in the pit. The land owner said, “The land was lent to someone else, and after digging several deep holes, they discarded a large amount of tangerines.” He added, “An accident occurred while filling the neglected holes.”
The authorities plan to establish an investigation team to reveal the exact circumstances of the accident. He also announced that he would be punished if any illegal activity is revealed during this process.
