Two drivers were involved in the accident, which happened during a motorcycle meet in the Swedish city of Linköping.

The police were notified of the accident at 5.20pm on Saturday.

– We received word that there had been a serious accident at Linköping’s motor stadium. Exactly how the accident happened is not clear to us, but it happened during a competition where two motorcycle riders overturned, and where one was very seriously injured, says the police’s duty commander Bo Gunnarsson to the newspaper The evening paper.

Both drivers were taken to hospital, and just after 18.30 one, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead.

Because the accident happened during a competition, there were many witnesses, the police say.

– It is a shocking incident where there have been a lot of people around, says Gunnarsson.

The police have seized the motorcycles, which will be examined by technicians.

Peter Kahrle, who is head of the association Linköping motorsällskap, tells Aftonbladet that the competition in question has been held for 58 years.

– We do motocross, road racing, speedway and trials. We have a lot of audience and participants primarily from Sweden, but also from Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and more, he says.
