Fatah, the main Palestinian organization in the occupied West Bank, has accused Iran of trying to sow chaos in the Palestinian territories, stressing that it will oppose operations from abroad that have nothing to do with the Palestinian cause.
Fatah, the movement that controls the Palestinian Authority, said it would not allow “our sacred cause and the blood of our people” to be exploited, adding that it would act against any external interference aimed at harming security forces or national institutions.
Israel has long accused Iran of aiding Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas, a Palestinian group – a rival of Fatah – that runs the Gaza Strip and launched the October 7 attack on Israel. Hamas has become more entrenched in the West Bank in recent years.
Last month, the Israeli military announced that security forces had stopped an illegal transfer of advanced weapons, including anti-tank mines, into the West Bank.
In the past, Tehran has not denied providing support to the armed groups, saying any support it provides is at the request of the Palestinians.
Fatah’s announcement came as the Palestinian Authority asked the UN Security Council to vote this month for Palestine to become a full member of the UN, a move that will increase global pressure for a two-state solution.
Under Israeli occupation since the 1967 Middle East war, the West Bank has been at the center of decades of conflict with the Palestinians, who want the region as the heart of a future independent state that would also include Gaza and East Jerusalem as its capital.
