PART Most people often snore while they sleep. If you pay attention, the phenomenon of snoring is often found in people with obese bodies. So why is this happening?
Head Nose and Neck Surgery Specialist, Dr. Dian Paramita Wulandari confirmed this. This phenomenon occurs because obese people have fat deposits in the throat, which can put pressure on the upper respiratory tract until the airways become narrow.
The pressure on the respiratory tract will then increase when they lie down. As a result, the airway becomes narrower, air cannot flow properly, and eventually you may snore throughout your sleep.
“Why does body weight cause sleep apnea? due to fat deposits. “The real problem is fat deposits in the areas around the airway,” said Dr. Dian, launching an online talk show on Instagram live of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, @kemenkes_ri.
“There is pressure due to fat deposits in these areas. In the area around our airway it is soft tissue, not hard tissue. “So it’s very easy to stress,” he said.
In addition, Dr. Dian explained that obese people tend to snore because excess fat creates an extra burden when they sleep, some of this fat accumulates in certain parts of the body such as the neck and throat.
“So if you get some fat, it’s usually in the chin, the chin gets bigger, yes, in the chin, the neck is also thick. “Well, when you sleep, all your muscles relax automatically, even if there are fat deposits around the neck,” he said.
