Currently, there are still about 800,000 Belgians who received their first injection of the AstraZeneca vaccine when there were still twelve weeks between the two injections. On May 12, health ministers decided to shorten this period to eight weeks, but anyone who had previously been vaccinated with or invited to an AstraZeneca vaccine, the twelve weeks continued to apply. This mainly concerns people over 65 and patients at risk, who had been given priority in the campaign. Due to the large vaccine delivery, they can now be optimally protected up to four weeks earlier – eight weeks after the first injection instead of twelve – which, according to the Vaccination task force, is crucial in view of the advancing Delta variant, the corona variant that was first identified in india.
