Are you living longer? In only Calabriaor almost. Thanks to a large economic contribution received from the Municipality of Varapodio, in the region of Reggio Calabria, the Valter Longo Foundation ready for, for the first time in Italy, an innovative study of the effect of “A lifelong diet”, created by the famous Professor Valter Longo.
This study aims to reduce fat mass, improve body composition and function, thereby positively impacting the biological age and overall health of the participating community.
The study: a revolutionary nutritional approach
Il projectwhich lasts six months, giving participants three possible paths:
1. A lifelong diet: a diet inspired by a centenarian in southern Italy, which involves a diet cycle that resembles a fast every three months.
2. Fasting-Reporting Diet: a five-day, low-calorie, completely plant-based dietary protocol administered every three months.
3. General food advice: based on Italian or international guidelines, with the option to switch to the Longevity Diet after the first six months.
Hosted by Walter Longothe study focuses on aging. The a famous biologist and researcher he is known for his studies in the fields of longevity and nutritional sciences. Longo was born in Genoa, Italy, and is currently professor of Biogerontology and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He earned a PhD in biochemistry from the same university and has dedicated much of his career to Explore aging mechanisms and how nutrition can affect them.
Longo is particularly famous for developing the “A lifelong diet,” a diet inspired by blue zone (regions of the world known for high life expectancy).
What is a “Lifelong Diet”?
The Longevity Diet is a food-based diet on the eating habits of Calabrian centenarians and those in parts of the world where higher longevity rates are recordedwhich mainly includes foods of plant origin, such as grains, vegetables, legumes and nuts, and a moderate consumption of fish, mostly small ones.
This diet model not only strengthens the the Mediterranean traditionbut also includes advanced scientific practices, such as 12-hour overnight fasting and periodic simulation diets, to promote longevity and reduce disease risk.
The “Fast Reporting Diet”: cell regeneration and health
As a result of more than twenty years of research, the crash diet is a nutritional protocol that has been shown to reduce age-related risk factors and various diseases. Participants will follow a five-day cycle, with a controlled calorie intake aimed at stimulating cell regeneration processes and improving various health indicators.
Participation and study
The study will be analyzed by nutritional biologists specialized in lifelong diet. Volunteer participants will begin with a nutritional visit and blood draw to identify any risk factors.
After that, they will undergo further nutritional visits and blood tests over six months. Those who wish will be able to continue with two optional visits in the following months.
Why Calabria?
The The choice of the village of Varapodio is not accidental. The Calabria stands out for the longevity of the population, a characteristic that is influenced by various genetic and environmental factors. Recent studies and demographic data show that the average age in the region continues to increase, going from 45.2 years in 2020 to 45.5 years in 2023with forecasts showing a further increase to 51.9 years by 2065. Currently, approx. 20.9% of the Calabrian population is over 65a percentage that could grow up to 36.3% in the coming decades, a value higher than the expected national average.
The aging population is accompanied by more and more neurodegenerative and chronic diseases, especially among the elderly. The area, being a “genetic isolation“, let’s point out the details genetic mutations associated with these diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and other rare neurological conditions.
This makes Calabria an important outdoor laboratory for the study and understanding of these pathologies. With this study, we try to recover and enhance nutritional heritage that may help restore health and longevity in the area.
A chance to live better and longer
Participation in this study represents a unique opportunity for the citizens of Varapodio to contribute to research that could change their understanding of nutrition and longevity.. The positive effects expected from the Longevity Diet, in combination with intermittent fasting practices, could open new frontiers in the fight against aging and its related diseases. .
With the support of the Valter Longo Foundation and the commitment of the community, Varapodio could be a model for other Italian cities and beyond, in promoting a lifestyle that includes health, well-being and longevity.
