Fast races by Almgren and Sundström in Doha

At the Diamond League gala in Doha, four Swedes were present. Simon Sundström ran the next fastest race of his career in the 3000 meter steeplechase when he finished eighth and Andreas Almgren made his fastest season debut in the 1500 meter by far.

After two competitions in China, the Diamond League stopped in Doha, where four Swedes started.

Turebergs Andreas Almgren and Simon Sundström from IFK Lidingö have both done many good races during the spring where Andreas set several Swedish records.

In Doha, Andreas made his season debut in the 1500 meters, a distance where he set a Swedish record at the Diamond League in Oslo barely a year ago with 3:32.00. Andreas placed himself at the back of the field and kept that position for basically the entire race. On the last lap, the Swede advanced several places and finished tenth. The time of 3:35.22 is Andreas’ third fastest in his career and his best season debut at the distance. Brian Komen of Kenya won in 3:32.43 after sprinting down compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot.

Simon Sundström was in the WC final in 2023 and in Doha he did the first race of the season in his main distance, the 3000 meter hurdles. Simon was good at the beginning but had some distance to the runners in front of him when the speed increased. He finished well, finishing eighth in 8:19.45, just over a second off his personal best and his second-fastest career run. Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu won in 8:07.25.

Örgrytes finished in the ladies’ height Maja Nilsson sixth at 1.88, two centimeters below his annual best. Angelina Topic from Serbia was the only one to clear 1.94 and won the competition.

Woolly Thobias Montler has struggled with hamstring problems and stopped at 7.74 in the men’s cross country event. After overstepping in the opening two jumps, Thobia’s only approved result came in the third round. He subsequently chose to cancel the competition.
