Faßmann deeply affected by the death of the contemporary witness Aba Lewit

One of the last survivors of the Mauthausen concentration camp has died – educational work on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism is more important than ever

Vienna (OTS) Education Minister Heinz Faßmann is deeply affected by the death of the contemporary witness Aba Lewit: “Aba Lewit was one of the last survivors of the Mauthausen concentration camp. As a contemporary witness, he often emphasized the importance of educational work on the crimes of the National Socialists. His commitment against Holocaust denial, for humanity and human rights will be remembered by many. “

Aba Lewit warned of anti-Semitism in memorial speeches and interviews. Fassmann says: “I bow in deep respect for the victims of the Holocaust. As Federal Minister for Education, Science and Research, I say with all clarity that I pursue a policy of zero tolerance towards all forms of anti-Semitism and racism. My department faces up to this historical responsibility and is heavily involved in the prevention of anti-Semitism through education “

The Ministry of Education responds responsibly to Lewit’s call for educational work. _erinnern.at_, the Ministry’s Holocaust Education Institute, provides support in teaching about the crimes of the National Socialists and in memorial site education.

“My condolences go to Aba Lewit’s family. We will keep his memory and continue to convey the history of the Holocaust to new generations of schoolchildren and live an active culture of remembrance in the schools, ”concluded Faßmann.
