The musical The Witch premiered on Broadway in 2003 and has been breaking one record after another since then. In 2013, it also beat the famous musical Phantom of the Opera, becoming the highest-grossing musical for nine years in a row. He came to us in 2019, on the boards of the GoJa Music Hall.
Now the work has received its film form. And the film The Enchantress, in which Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grandehad a spectacular premiere in London yesterday. It was full of stars and of course the main color was green. But also extravagance, fashion courage and dark majesty that simply belong to the world of magic.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande – like night and day
They play opposite characters in the film. There is a huge animosity between them, but over time it turns into friendship. And both actresses followed this storyline even at the festive premiere.
Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, an all-green but extremely gifted wizarding student, arrived dressed in a model from the workshop of the fashion brand Schiparelli. That she really is from the world of magic, spells and charms, she made it clear with monstrous accessories in the form of sequined tights, platform shoes, black fingerless gloves and glued-on, extremely long nails. The velvet cap with feathers was just the icing on the cake. Erivo simply left no one in doubt that her character is the darker, more magical, at first glance more creepy. But not everything is as it seems at first glance…
Even Ariana Grande styled herself into her character and fashionably adopted the role of the beautiful, gentle, charming witch at first sight. She reached for a romantic pale yellow Ralph Lauren model and accessorized it with sparkling Swarovski jewels. Probably no one else had more tulle on their dress that evening. Even Grande paid tribute to the color green through green sunglasses.

Green in the main role
Of course, there were also other actors at the premiere, and many of them were covered in green. For example, Ashley Roberts shone in a dress with a gigantic train and a deep, breathtaking neckline. He didn’t even allow the wearer to wear a bra, but the singer clearly proved that she didn’t need one.
Actress Michelle Yeoh, who plays the dean of the witchcraft faculty Madam Morrible in the film, also incorporated green into her outfit. She brought out a fairly simple sheath evening dress by fashion brand Bottega Veneta, in which fabric is combined with leather.
And the actor remained faithful to the world of magic, spells and majestic spells Jeff Goldblumwho plays a powerful wizard in the film. He impressed above all with a black and tailor-made Burberry woolen coat, which had an unmistakable fur collar.
And if you were enticed by this, you can start looking forward, because the film The Witch is headed our way too. It will arrive in Czech cinemas on December 5.
Indeed, this is a fascinating article about the Broadway musical, The Witch, and its recent film adaptation. So, to kick things off, I would love to hear from both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda respectively, on their experiences portraying these iconic characters and the challenges they faced in bringing them to life. Could you tell us more about how you prepared for your roles and what kind of research you did to embody these complex, dynamic characters?
Furthermore, the article mentions an impressive feat of the musical as it beat Phantom of the Opera and became the highest-grossing musical for nine years in a row. As someone who has been part of such a successful production, Cynthia, could you share your thoughts on the longevity of The Witch and what you believe sets it apart from other musicals?
Ariana, as someone who is no stranger to the silver screen, was there anything unique or challenging about transitioning from the stage to film in The Enchantress? Additionally, could you discuss the importance of fashion and costume design in bringing the fantastical world of The Witch to life and collaborating with designers like Schiaparelli and Ralph Lauren on your looks for the film’s premiere?
Lastly, the premiere itself sounds like quite an extravagant affair, which I’m sure was a dream come true for any fashion enthusiast. But what about the technical aspect of this production? Jeff Goldblum, who plays The Wizard, has a remarkable style that pays homage to his character’s powerful and magical nature. As an actor known for his versatility and memorable characters, could you share your thoughts on the importance of costume design in promoting the storytelling process within The Witch? And for those eagerly awaiting the film’s release in the Czech Republic, could you leave us with a teaser about what audiences can expect from this adaptation of The Witch?
