Fascism and its attempt to stop the wheel of history – PublicoGT

By Jorge Santos

During the last few months we have exclusively addressed the political, social and economic situation in the country, however, it seems essential to me that, without removing the national perspective, we give way to a much broader analysis of what is happening in the world and the serious setback that we are observing. I will begin by stating that what the mafias do in Guatemala, grouped together in the most rancid of the right, is without a doubt a manifestation of what is happening in the Central American region. Nicaragua and El Salvador are increasingly witnessing dictatorial regimes that affect democracy and the human rights of their inhabitants. But this climate even affects countries that previously valued their society, such as Costa Rica.

Further south of our continent, in Ecuador, a serious political and social crisis unleashes acts of violence and only in the demonstrations and in the so-called National Strike, 7 citizens were murdered, at least 331 injured and more than a hundred people were recorded. detained. After that, a fruitless dialogue that will demonstrate once again the ability of the right to deceive and do whatever it takes to stay in power and from there sustain the privileges of big capital. This year, in the midst of the electoral process, political candidates in the race were assassinated or attempted to be assassinated, and the escalation of public demonstrations were harshly repressed by the army and police. For its part, in Argentina, in the midst of the electoral process, a liberal and loquacious character comes to the public arena who has capitalized on the feelings of a generation that was born after the corralito and that at present knows only through its fathers, mothers and grandparents which meant a minimum social welfare state. Milei is the best expression of liberal fanaticism that, if it comes to power, will plunge Argentina into its worst crisis of violence and fascism after the Videla dictatorship.

But in the global north, is where this condition of serious democratic and human rights regression is perceived and evident. The United States of America and Europe are immersed in serious social crises, their citizens seeing how the Welfare State is being dismantled, giving way to more and more neoliberal policies that affect their living conditions. In this escalation of fascism worldwide it is evident how big capital intends to take advantage of the States to expand their obscene profit margins. Perhaps the most critical point of this situation is the Genocide carried out today by the political leadership of Israel, against the Palestinian People in the Gaza Strip. Taking advantage of a narrative that attempts to make the entire population look like members of Hamas, children, women, and older adults are murdered. This madness must stop now or humanity is close to knowing, as it did in the late 1930s, the worst face of the human being.

Defender of human rights, lover of life, hopes and utopias, which has led me to work for another Guatemala, in student and peasant organizations, for victims of the Internal Armed Conflict and for the protection of human rights defenders. I faithfully believe, like Otto René Castillo, that those who build it beautiful find life beautiful.
