The livestock sector has a surplus of 50,000 tons per year to be exported, the president of the Bolivian Cattlemen’s Confederation, Adrián Castedo, assured in Trinidad.
“The livestock sector in Bolivia produces 350,000 tons per year and the domestic market consumes 280,000, so we have a surplus of 50,000 tons,” he said.
He informed that last year around 18,000 tons were exported, consequently there is a wide margin to continue exporting.
The leader commented that the Beni becomes an important incentive because it is super inhabitant in terms of the number of cattle for large-scale production.
“The Beni produces a lot of cattle, a good part goes to other departments of the country, but there is a surplus to export; then it is important that clear signals are given, that exports continue and that they increase, ”he said.
However, they ask the national authorities for sufficient guarantees to grow considering that the country has the capacity to triple its cattle herd.
In this sense, if ranchers experience growth, more work and foreign exchange will be generated from meat exports.
Castedo said that currently the main market they have is China at 90%, followed by Peru and Ecuador. Markets like Russia and others are not developed yet.
“There are many interested in Bolivian meat, there is Saudi Arabia, Japan, Chile; there are many projections and that is the call we make to the National Agricultural Health and Food Safety Service (SENASAG) to continue opening markets,” he said.
In relation to the refrigerators, he assured that there are quite a few and also the maquila of the meat is not very complicated. There is sufficient and installed capacity, he added.
